Midlife Memo 2: Crisis
Is a midlife crisis inevitable? Is it, in fact, a crisis? Over the years researchers have struggled with this issue, asking different questions and reaching different conclusions. Their efforts have resembled the blind men who touched different parts of the same elephant, each describing the animal based on his own experience. This two-page publication explores the concept of the midlife crisis and asks whether change should be viewed as a crisis. Note: Available in PDF only; not available in hard copy from the Publications Distribution Center.

Midlife Memo 3: Marriage
Some marriage and family experts say that midlife is the most challenging time for a marriage. Yet couples themselves often report midlife as an especially happy time. While individual situations differ, it is safe to say that most couples who have reached their forties, fifties, and beyond have a valuable investment to protect. If you and your spouse have not had children, the pattern of your life together in the middle years may change in less dramatic ways than if you have been raising a family. Still, individual spouses go through an important period as they reach midlife, and some marital adjustment may be required. If you have been raising a family, you will also need to relate ifferently to your maturing children. You may also need to be sensitive in new ways to the changing needs of your parents. This two-page publication explores the issues surrounding marriage in midlife. Note: Available in PDF only; not available in hard copy from the Publications Distribution Center.
